They took stock of the Syrian chemical weapon issue, focusing in particular on:

- the process underway to destroy the stockpiles declared by Syria and the uncertainties that remain regarding Syria’s initial declaration to the OPCW in 2013. By ratifying the convention in 2013, Syria pledged to submit an initial declaration to the OPCW providing a comprehensive listing of its chemical weapon stocks and capacities.

- the investigations underway into cases involving the use of chorine and sarin gas in Syria documented by the organization in 2017.

Jean-Yves Le Drian reaffirmed that protecting the chemical weapon non-proliferation regime is key to safeguarding our system of collective security. Following the repeated violations by Syria of its commitments, it is incumbent upon the states parties to the convention to protect it and to seek to ensure that there is no impunity.
